Positive: Our extensive stay at Villa Ines was one to remember. We were so close to the train station. Within a 3 minute walk we were at a train that could take us to Florence, Viareggio, Cinque Terre, Pisa, Lucca, you name it. And downtown Altopascio was authentic and amazing! Also a few minutes walk. For such a small town, the cafes and restaurants were delightful and inexpensive. The food was soooo good. Trattoria dell'Orologio, La Mangiore del Tau (best burger ever), La Dogana and La Pizzeria Ciclada were our faves but there are so many others. Altopascio also has a pretty active nightlife! Open late and something always happening on the weekends. We spent a lot of time in our little town. Lucca being only a 9 minute train ride away was also the best. And the pool area was our favorite respite. The pool was always clean, and it was HUGE! Great lounges and chairs to relax on, and the shallow end was big enough to play pool games. The house itself was very large and accommodating with very comfortable beds and enough bathrooms for all 9 of us. Ina was the house contact, and she was delightful, very attentive and helpful throughout our 3 1/2 week stay. Also, we felt very safe as it was a gated property, not that the town was unsafe... we felt safe everywhere!
Negative: I think they were a little misleading when they said a "stone's throw" to Lucca. But it was fine because we loved Altopascio and Lucca was only a 9 minute train ride away. We went there often, but had to leave by 10:30pm to catch the train back. If we had a car, it would've been a 15+ minute drive, but we didn't have a car, and loved how easy the train was a such a short walk to town. I wish they had air conditioning in the kitchen (they only have A/C in bedrooms, which was nice) or at least a fan. I had to buy a fan because we liked hanging out in the kitchen after our day and played games. Also, they have a pool, but no pool towels, and only one towel included per guest for showering. I ended up buying some beach towels, and I ordered more bath towels, and they graciously brought them. The mosquitos were probably the worst problem. Upon arriving, the house was FULL of mosquitos. They don't have screens, so we had to keep the windows and doors buttoned up, skirting out of the house quickly so nothing could get in. This remedied the problem of mosquitos IN the house, but all the beautiful areas that are shown in the pictures were mosquito infested and pretty unusable if we didn't drench ourselves in bug spray. The good thing was the pool area wasn't buggy at all! The bad thing is we had to keep the house all closed up, with no A/C or ventilation in the main living areas. The house is charming, but more run down than it looks in the pictures. The kitchen is cozy, but the refrigerator is in the other room, and the living room isn't really ample for the amount of guests that can stay. The couches are old and musty. The dining room is beautiful. The bedrooms are HUGE and the two bathrooms with showers are small. But that was fine. The other bathrooms had tubs with handhelds, and that was perfectly fine as well. Three flights of stairs, by the way.
